Wall & Floor Tiling at Skillbuild 2013

The Tiling department have had another successful year in the Skillbuild Yorkshire and Humber regional heats, with four Barnsley College students receiving an award for their efforts.

Dominic Batty achieved 1st place in the senior competition, with David Cunningham being awarded 3rd place in the same category. Sarah Watson and Ryan Gascoigne were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the new entrant competition and the Tiling staff are over-joyed at the result.

Here are a few photographs from the Brickwork competition at the Skillbuild Yorkshire & Humber regional heats 2013, which were hosted at the Barugh Green site here at Barnsley College.

Will Proud successfully achieved 1st place in the Senior competition to add to his run of wins over the 2013 competition season. Joe Crossley participated in the new entrant category and did really well creating his model to a very high standard.

Plumbing students raise money for Barnsley Hospice

We are delighted to announce that Brian Bellis and his Plumbing students have managed to raise £30.41 for the Barnsley Hospice, which is a local charity that supports people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

This was achieved by the sale of pens over the last 6 months.

Thanks so much for donating to such a great cause!

Ryan Davidson wins second place in the Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year regional heats

Ryan Davidson took part in the regional heats of the Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year competiton yesterday in Doncaster and managed to reach second place. It was a closely run race with Ryan only missing out on the top spot by a few minor marks.

He was awarded a prize of £30 and a goody bag of paint brushes and equipment.

This is the second time this month that we are celebrating Ryan's success and we hope to continue doing so when he takes part in the Skillbuild competition at Barnsley College in June.

Double Success at the Guild of Bricklayers Yorkshire Regional Competition

Brickwork are currently celebrating a double success in a local competition.

The Guild of Bricklayers Yorkshire Regional Competition took place last Friday and Construction students Will Proud and Trent Johnson both secured first place in the categories they were entered into.

Will was announced the winner of the Senior competition for his work in the 6 hour long challenge, while Trent achieved the top spot for the New Entrant category. We also had a runner-up in the Junior competition, so we would also like to congratulate Joe Crossley for his hard work and effort.

Winning the Guild of Bricklayers competition is a great achievement and we are estatic that two of our students have managed to achieve such a feat. The competition was assessed by the Guild Judges who look for quality, accuracy, clean work and skill. Trent & Will will have had to have produced work to a very high standard to win their places and we are glad their hard work has been recognised.

Ryan Davidson and the Dulux Apprentice of the Year competition

The P&D department are celebrating the success of apprentice Ryan Davidson, who took part in the Dulux Apprentice of the Year competition in York yesterday.

Ryan achieved 5th place, which is a great start to his competition season. This year he will also be competing in the Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year competition and the Yorkshire & Humber regional heats of the Skillbuild competition, which is hosted here at Barnsley College.

We would like congratulate him on his success so far and wish him luck in his forthcoming events.

The Equality and Diversity Competition 2013

The Equality & Diversity competition is an annual College-wide contest, were students from all departments create a piece of work that reflects an aspect of Equality & Diversity. This year's theme was 'Respect' and the Construction entry was a large ornately-mosaiced domed room that has been constructed and decorated at the Barugh Green site.

The winners of the competiton were announced in the Atrium as part of the Equality & Diversity event, where all the entries that reached the final were printed onto T-Shirts. Here is our T-shirt, which appeared on the finalists washing line.

The photograph below shows plastering student Michael Taylor & Tiling student David Cunningham with tutors at the Equality & Diversity event waiting for the winners of the competition to be announced.

Their entry into the Equality & Diversity competition reached the final, but didn't win the prize. Regardless of this it's an amazing piece of work, which we are looking forward to showing off to visitors during the Skillbuild competition in June.
