Visit from Barugh Green Primary to Santa's Grotto 2013

On the 16th of December 2013 the department was happy to welcome a large group of primary school children from Barugh Green primary to take part in construction activities and meet Santa in his Grotto.

Each trade area arranged tasks for the children to do within small groups on a rotation, so that each child had the opportunity to take part in all activities, which included:
  • helping to build an arch in Brickwork
  • creating patterns and rag rolling with Painting and Decorating
  • learning how to bend copper pipe with Plumbing
  • creating a pan stand with the Joiners
  • plaster casting Christmas ornaments with Plastering
  • tile mosaicing Christmas pictures with Tiling.
Here are a few photos of the children undertaking the activities:

The afternoon concluded with a performance by the children who sang 'Santa Buddy' for the staff as a way of saying thank you.

During the song, Santa arrived and was waiting in his grotto to meet the pupils and give them all a Christmas gift:

It was great that all the hard work by are own students to create the Grotto was appreciated by the local children on such a wonderful afternoon.

Here is a video from the afternoon too, showing the students singing Santa Buddy for the staff to say Thank You.

Open Evening: 27th of November 2013

Barnsley college has regular open evenings throughout the year to allow potential new students to get a taste of the courses we have available.

At the latest open evening the Construction trades had a competition to see who could create the most interactive and enjoyable stand.

Here are a few photographs from the event:

Shoot to Score Competition

The Shoot to Score competition was a fund raising activity run by the Bricklayers to raise money for a local bowel cancer charity.

Students were asked to pay 50p to take five shots at the goalie model, where if they shot the ball through the big circle they were awarded 10 points and they were given 20 points if they scored in the small circle.

Students from both brickwork and plastering took part and we managed to raise £31.

There was a prize for the highest scorer, who was brickwork apprentice Jordan Bray. He scored 80 points with 5 shots and was awarded a Stabila level for his efforts.
