PPG Visit to Painting & Decorating

On Thursday 25th January 2018 the Painting & Decorating team had a visit from PPG, who is one of the largest paint coatings companies in the world.

The Full time Level 3 students and the apprentices had a talk delivered by James and Jim about their products from the Leyland and Johnstones range. They also discussed progression within the industry and the benefits of the different finishings and coatings.

Afterwards the students took part in a competition that challenged their cutting in skills. The entrants were timed and the most accurate creation was judged by the tutorial team.

Sam Leak was deemed to be the overall winner and was presented with a tool kit by PPG for his efforts. He was also invited to apply to take part in the Johnstones Young Painter of the Year competition. Well done Sam!

Primary school pupils visit Disney inspired Santa’s grotto

Forty pupils from Burton Road Primary School have visited a Disney themed Santa’s grotto at Barnsley College. 

The Year 3 pupils were invited to the College’s Construction Centre (CUBE) where they had the opportunity to visit Santa in a grotto which has been designed, built and decorated by Barnsley College Construction students as part of their studies. 

After meeting Santa, the pupils continued with the festive spirit by taking part in a number of Christmas themed activities which were organised by staff and students. Pupils painted their own Christmas plaster molds whilst listening to festive music and they also took part in a game of ‘Snowball Shootout’, a penalty shootout style of game where they threw ‘snowballs’ at Rudolph and Santa. 

Kevin Scholey, Head of Construction at Barnsley College, said: “We are always looking at ways in which we can strengthen our links with the local community. The visit was a great way for the pupils to get a taste of construction trades, have some fun and get into the Christmas spirit. Our students and staff worked hard to ensure that the event ran smoothly and they did a fantastic job with the grotto.”

Miss Hanson, Year 3 class teacher at Burton Road Primary School, added: “It’s been a great afternoon and the pupils have had lots of fun taking part in all the activities and meeting Santa. It was also a great opportunity for them to see the excellent facilities at the CUBE and to make them aware of what is available in Barnsley.”

Morgan wins the Guild of Bricklayers Juniors Final

Great news!

After Morgan's success in the regional heats last week, Morgan has now won first place in the Guild of Bricklayers Juniors national final in Derby yesterday.

This is a great achievement in this prestigious national bricklaying competition.

 

Our Bricklaying tutor Michael Lindsay is very proud of Morgan's achievement. He states: 'The hard work and effort Morgan put in to practice prior to the competition and through the competition is credit to him and he thoroughly deserves the reward of achieving first place in a national competition.'

Jack Pogson named the Barnsley College Plastering Apprentice of the Year 2017

Well done to Jack for winning the Plastering apprentice of the year award.

Jack has worked hard all year and put 100% effort in his theory sessions and practical.  Jack has 100% attendance and has improved his skills and knowledge every week by trying his best.

Well done Jack and keep up the great work!

Morgan achieves success at the regional Guild of Bricklayers competition 2017

Well done to Barnsley College Bricklaying student Morgan Chambers, who won the Guild of Bricklayers Yorkshire region Junior heat on Friday 16th June in the competition in Hull.

He will now compete in the Guild of Bricklayers final in Derby on Wednesday 21st of June.

2017 Inter-Trade Football Tournament winners

Every year the Construction department holds an Inter-Trade football tournament to celebrate the end of the academic year.

This year saw 6 teams made up of students from Brickwork, Plastering, Joinery, Professional Studies and Plumbing, competing for our silver shield. The tournament was won by the Professional Studies team, who won every match they played on the afternoon.

A site visit for the plumbing department

This week the construction department was given the opportunity to visit a Keepmoat housing development in Barnsley. 14 students from Barnsley College who are currently studying towards a level 1 Plumbing Diploma got to experience what it is like to be on a real construction site.

Katie Stafford the Social Value Manager and the Site Manager, Jamie Ellis, introduced Keepmoat and what the development was for. An H&S briefing was carried out and information on apprenticeships and development opportunities was also passed on to the students.

The Site Manager took the students around the site and into some of the houses allowing them to see the different fixing stages when building a house.

The students were given information that related to their actual course such as plumbing installations, the job roles of people working on the site, the site programme and scheduling, H&S, Quality standards that everyone works to, Inspections that take place, the importance of housekeeping and the potential earnings in the industry.

The site visit was invaluable as many of the students have not yet had the opportunity to see a live site and this visit gave them a better understanding by putting the training they have received in college and seeing it in a real environment.

All the students and staff really enjoyed the visit and can’t thank Keepmoat enough for the visit and the opportunity they have given two further students from Barnsley College to undertake a placement on the site in Athersley.
